Residential Project

The East Algarve Farmhouse

  • Location: East Algarve, Portugal

  • Type: Full-home renovation

  • Scope: Preservation of the original shell, with a full internal reconfiguration, material restoration, new plumbing throughout, and a complete new roof.

  • Completed: 2024

The Brief

A sensitive renovation of a historic 1850s farmhouse in the East Algarve, Portugal, reimagined for contemporary family life. The aim was to create a more open and practical layout, improve plumbing, add an extra bathroom, and introduce more usable space for the children, all while respecting the original footprint and character of the house.

The Challenge

The farmhouse was affected by significant roof damage, dampness associated with the Santa Catarina tiles, and cane roofing that held dust and contributed to allergies. Its layout also no longer suited the way the family lived, with the house feeling back to front and the old kitchen becoming the natural point of entry. The task was to resolve these structural and functional shortcomings without losing the honesty and charm of the original building.

The Approach

The design centred on preserving what mattered while improving the way the house worked. The natural stone walls were retained, the internal flow was simplified, and key updates were made to the plumbing and overall layout. An additional bathroom was incorporated, and a mezzanine was introduced in the children’s room to create play space and make full use of the ceiling height. Throughout the renovation, breathable materials were prioritised, including lime finishes, breathable paint, and insulation appropriate to the building’s age and construction.

The Outcome

The finished home feels lighter, healthier, and far better suited to everyday living, while still holding the quiet character of the original farmhouse. Alongside the architectural improvements, rainwater harvesting was integrated to collect water from the roof for use in the swimming pool and garden, bringing a thoughtful and sustainable layer to the project.
